Looseville Debut
(Daphne Ruth showing Pinkie a little sisterly love.)
After months of anticipation, Pinkie Jenkins and I finally made our Looseville debut here in Kentucky. Pinkie took a special trip up from Hotlanta to help make it a simply huge event. It was just like old times as we gossiped around our makeup stations, adding layer upon layer of glitter and glamour to our already gorgeous mugs.
Peppa Roni Jenkins wasn’t able to make it out that night due to a nasty case of gas. However, she was thoughtful enough to send her houseboy, Kevin, over with a special delivery of pizza. The darling asked whether or not we’d really want to eat right before going out on the town all dolled up. He’s obviously not hung out with the Jenkins clan before. Those pizza pies were gone before he could get his hands on a slice. To make it up to him, though, we smacked him with a little glitter and dragged him along for the night.
Naturally, our first stop for the evening was the show room at The Infection. We got there just before the first performance of the night and were literally mauled by throngs of brides-to-be and other bachelorette party attendees. They clearly recognized Pinkie and me from one of our many unreleased films. The place went wild as soon as we got there; I’m still having vision problems from all the flash photography pointed in our direction.
All three of us enjoyed the hell out of the LaBoy LeFemme show that night. Hurricane Summers and the rest of the cast are absolutely top notch entertainers. I was sad, though, that Mokha Montrese was in Chicago that weekend for Continental. I would have liked for Pinkie to see her perform; she’s a whole lotta woman.
After the show a bunch of our friends showed up at the bar, so we decided to go exploring. We couldn’t drag Pinkie away from Privates, the “man’s bar” complete with a boy dancing in a shower. Talk about good clean fun! Of course, things only went downhill from there. Next we hit GMO where Pinkie proceeded to eat a banana split sundae right off one of the strippers. That girl will put anything in her mouth!
I was sad to see Pinkie head back at the end of the weekend. But alas, my refrigerator and cupboards were empty. I hope she’ll be back soon with more of the Jenkins clan so that we can show Looseville how to party like drag queens!
(Babydaddy, Ana Matronic, Jake Shears, Paddy Boom and Del Marquis get ready to rock your world.)
One of my absolute favorite current bands is the sensational Scissor Sisters. This New York City group of marvelous musicians is gloriously glamtastic. Their mission is to return the fun and the glitter back to pop music. In a lot of ways, they seem to be kindred spirits to the Jenkins clan. Their sound is best described as Captain Fantastic-era Elton John meets disco-era Bee Gees. As you can see from the band shot above, their look and stage persona is just as dragtastic as their sound. The lead singer of the band is Jake Shears, an absolute hottie if ever there was one. As you can probably tell from the pic on the right, he’s not exactly shy either. When I met him after a show in Hotlanta, I made sure to coyly address him by his real name (ya, like I’m going to tell you what it is). The poor dear was completely flustered trying to remember how we knew each other. I reassured him that we had never met previously; he certainly would have recalled Daphne Ruth Jenkins if we had.
Anna Matronic is Jake’s side-kick and vocal harmonizer. To truly understand her contribution to the band, you have to see them live. She keeps the party going at all times. From the gossip I’ve heard, she knows how to boogie down off stage as well.
That big cuddly bear, Babydaddy, is the main songwriter as well as the bass player. Velma Gwen, Dolly Wood and I all hung out with him over at Woofs after one of their gigs in Hotlanta. He was an absolute sweetheart. I'm sure that Paris and Cindy Jenkins would have joined us there as well if they handn't gotten so totally tore up at the show. Del Marquis, the fiercely fashionable guitarist also came out for cocktails that night.
Paddy Boom, the solitary straight man in the group, handles drums. According to rumor, musical instruments aren’t the only things he likes slapping. Apparently, he’s a big old S&M daddy for all you ladies out there. My bottom burns just thinking about it.
The band’s first eponymous release is in constant rotation over at my pad. In fact, I’ve even performed that excellent ode to trannie street walkers, Filthy/Gorgeous. The most popular song off the album is probably, Take Your Momma Out which details the delights of taking your Mom to a strip joint. However, you shouldn’t overlook other classics such as Laura with its scathing put down, “This will be the last time I ever cut your hair!”
Their first cd was a huge hit overseas, but didn’t have quite as big an impact here in the States. It did, however, garner the attention of some serious heavy hitters in the music industry. Elton John is a huge fan and has assisted the band in the studio for the production of their hotly anticipated new cd, Ta-Dah. Check out the video above for the insanely catchy first single, I Don’t Feel Like Dancing. I guarantee you won’t be able to sit still for this one. The Scissor Sisters have also landed themselves a coveted spot on Fashion Rocks, a concert airing this Friday at 9pm on CBS. They’ll be performing alongside other megastar musicians such as Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé as well as up-and-coming talents such as Rihanna. It’s simply a matter of time before the ranks of the Sisterhood is overflowing with new disciples.
