Wacky Waters
Well, lo and behold, it appears that Looseville, Kentucky is just looney for John Waters. Several venues around town have been hosting Waters-themed events to celebrate his visit to this fair city.
First up, Comedy Caravan screened two evenings of free John Waters films. Peppa Roni and I ventured out for "Polyester" night. They provided Odorama cards so that we could experience this aromatic cinematic delight the way it was meant to be seen...and smelled. I'd forgotten just how hearbreaking Divine's performance is in that film; not to mention how yummy Tab Hunter is.
The fabulous and trendy 21C Museum Hotel pitched in by hosting an exhibit of Waters' recent photography and illustrations. It definitely seemed fitting to have his work shown in a museum where the men's room urinal wall is made of glass. Yes, while you're relieving yourself, you can see the art lovers strolling down the hallway. I'm sure Mr. Waters approved.
Saturday was the main event: John Waters himself came and spoke at the Bomhard Theater as part of the LEO Presents A Little Off Center Series. To get geared up, Peppa and I enjoyed a little afternoon home viewing of the crowd-pleasing "Hairspray" as well as the filthy "Pink Flamingos". There's nothing like some singing rosebud and a dog feces feast to get you geared up for an evening of witty banter.
If John Waters comes to your town, do yourself a favor and catch the show. It's funnier and more twisted than any stand-up routine I've ever seen. He dishes on everything from literacy in America to the current state of pornography. I haven't felt that intellectually stimulated in ages.
In fact, Peppa and I are in such a Waters frenzy, we just finished marveling at the sickness that is "Serial Mom". It had never occured to me before what an influence Kathleen Turner's portrayel of that maniacal mother Beverly Suthpin must have been on the creation of Desperate Housewive's Bree Hodge. Speaking of which, it's only a few hours until a new episode of that delightful show. I think we'll put on "A John Waters Christmas" to get into the holiday spirit and cook some dinner until then.
Smooches,
Daph
